Week 8 of Pregnancy – Your Baby Is the Size of a Raspberry

Welcome to Week 8 of pregnancy! Your baby has now grown to about the size of a raspberry (around 0.6–0.7 inches long) and is developing at an incredible pace. In just a couple of weeks, their body has gone from a cluster of cells to a more defined little being with arms, legs, and even tiny fingers beginning to form.

At 4 Baby Ultrasound, we love celebrating these early milestones with parents-to-be. This week marks an exciting stage where many pregnancy symptoms become more noticeable and your baby is becoming more recognizable than ever.

Baby’s Development at Week 8

Your little raspberry is making huge progress! Here’s what’s happening inside the womb:

Arms & Legs Take Shape

  • Limb buds are growing longer and joints are beginning to bend.
  • Fingers and toes are starting to separate, although they may still look webbed.
    Facial Features
  • Eyes are more developed and covered by thin eyelids.
  • The tip of the nose and the upper lip are starting to become visible.
    Internal Organs
  • The heart has fully formed four chambers and beats around 150–170 times per minute.
  • Lungs, liver, and kidneys are continuing to develop.
  • The brain is growing rapidly, supporting new nerve connections.
    Tiny Movements
  • Your baby is already making small spontaneous movements, although it’s too early for you to feel them.
By Week 8, your baby has graduated from being called an “embryo” to a fetus a huge milestone in development.

Mom’s Experience in Week 8

At this stage, pregnancy symptoms can be strong, thanks to the rise of hCG and progesterone hormones. Here’s what you might notice:

  • Nausea & Morning Sickness
Symptoms may peak this week, especially if you’re carrying twins. Eating small meals can help.

  • Breast Tenderness
Breasts may feel fuller, heavier, and more sensitive as milk ducts grow.

  • Increased Fatigue
Your body is working hard to support baby’s growth—rest when you can.

  • Bloating & Gas
Hormonal changes slow digestion, leading to bloating or mild discomfort.

  • Frequent Urination
Your growing uterus is pressing on the bladder.

  • Skin Changes
Some women notice a “pregnancy glow,” while others experience breakouts. Both are normal.

Every pregnancy is unique, so symptoms may vary.

Ultrasound at Week 8

An ultrasound at this stage can be a magical experience. Here’s what you may see during a Week 8 ultrasound:

  • Baby’s Shape – Your little one now looks more like a tiny person, with a rounded head and budding limbs.

  • Heartbeat – A strong flicker is visible, and you may even be able to hear the heartbeat.

  • Gestational Age Confirmation – Measurements of your baby’s crown-to-rump length (CRL) help confirm due dates.

  • Multiple Babies – If you’re carrying twins or more, this is often when it becomes clearer.

At 4 Baby Ultrasound, we use advanced imaging technology so you can see your baby in detail. Many parents cherish this first glimpse of their raspberry-sized miracle.

Health & Wellness Tips at Week 8

  1. Taking care of your health this week is key for both you and your baby:

    1. Stick to Prenatal Vitamins
Keep up with folic acid, iron, and DHA to support brain and spinal cord development.
    2. Eat Nutritious Foods
      • Prioritize lean protein, leafy greens, fruits, and whole grains.
      • Ginger or lemon may help ease nausea.
    3. Stay Hydrated
Aim for 8–10 glasses of water daily, especially if you’re experiencing morning sickness.
    4. Exercise Safely
Gentle workouts like walking or yoga can improve energy and reduce stress.
    5. Rest & Self-Care
Listen to your body. Short naps and early bedtimes can make a big difference.
    6. Avoid Harmful Substances
No alcohol, smoking, or recreational drugs. Check with your doctor before taking any new medication.

Prenatal Care in Week 8

By now, you’ve likely scheduled your first prenatal appointment. During this visit, your provider may:

  • Perform blood tests and urine tests

  • Discuss your medical history

  • Review your diet and lifestyle habits

  • Possibly do an early ultrasound

This is also a great time to ask questions about nutrition, exercise, safe medications, and what to expect over the next few weeks.

Emotional Connection at Week 8

Even though your baby is still tiny, many parents find Week 8 very emotional. Seeing a heartbeat and a more defined shape during ultrasound makes the experience feel more real.

Ways to connect with your growing baby:

  • Start taking weekly “bump photos.”

  • Keep a pregnancy journal to track symptoms, feelings, and milestones.

  • Share ultrasound pictures with close family or friends.
