Welcome to the second trimester often considered the most magical phase of pregnancy. From week 14 through week 27, you’ll witness remarkable changes in your baby’s development and experience a growing sense of connection and anticipation. Whether you’re learning your little one’s sex, watching them wriggle during ultrasounds, or feeling your first flutter, this trimester brings a world of wonder.
Week 14: Red blood cell production begins in the spleen. Baby measures ~3½ inches (87 mm, crown to rump) and weighs ~1½ ounces (45 g).
Week 15: Bones continue hardening, and basic hair patterns emerge on the scalp.
Week 16: Limb movements become coordinated. The head begins to straighten; eyes move, and ears near their final positions, though movements are still too subtle to feel.
Week 17: Tiny toenails form, and your baby might start rolling or flipping inside you.
Week 18: Hearing takes hold your baby’s developing ears can now pick up sounds. The digestive system is also starting to work.
Week 19: Vernix caseosa, a protective waxy coating, appears and helps preserve delicate skin.
Week 20: You may begin to feel movement known as quickening. By now, baby is sleeping and waking regularly.
Week 21: Baby may suck their thumb. Lanugo (fine downy hair) covers their skin, and the sucking reflex is developing.
Week 22: Hair becomes visible, eyebrows and scalp hair are forming, and internal reproductive organs continue developing.
Week 23: Fingerprints and footprints take shape, and lungs begin producing surfactant vital for breathing outside the womb.
Week 24: The skin is wrinkled and translucent with a pinkish tint. Baby is around 8¼ inches (210 mm) from crown to rump and weighs ~1⅓ pounds (630 g)
Week 25: Baby may respond to familiar sounds like your voice. REM sleep begins.
Week 26: Eyebrows and eyelashes form. Eyes are well developed but likely still closed. Baby is about 9 inches (230 mm) and weighs ~2 pounds (820 g).
Week 27: As the second trimester closes, the nervous system matures, fat layers increase (giving smoother skin), and baby is well on the way to looking like the newborn you’ll meet.
Your prenatal visits often become monthly through week 28. These visits include tracking weight, blood pressure, fundal height, and monitoring baby’s heartbeat.
Between weeks 24–28, your care provider may perform gestational diabetes screening in addition to regular checks.
