Week 21 – Large Banana – 4Baby Ultrasound & Photography boutique

Week 21 of Pregnancy – Your Baby Is the Size of a Large Banana

You’re now 21 weeks pregnant, and your baby is growing quickly, measuring about the size of a large banana! At this stage, your little one is roughly 10.5 to 11 inches long and weighs about 12–13 ounces. The halfway mark is behind you, and from here on, your baby will continue to gain weight steadily, preparing for life outside the womb.

At 4 Baby Ultrasound, we love sharing this exciting time with expectant parents through our 2D, 3D, 4D, and HD Live ultrasounds helping you see your baby’s growing features and movements up close.

Baby’s Development at Week 21

Your baby is becoming stronger and more active every day. Here’s what’s happening this week:

Size & Growth

  • About 10.5–11 inches long and the size of a large banana.
  • Baby is starting to fill out with a little more fat under the skin.
    Skin & Fat
  • The skin is still thin but gradually becoming less translucent.
  • Fat stores are beginning to develop, helping regulate body temperature after birth.
    Digestive System
  • The intestines are practicing contractions in preparation for digestion.
  • Baby is swallowing amniotic fluid, which aids in lung and digestive development.
    Taste Buds
  • Tiny taste buds are now fully developed.
  • Baby can taste hints of what you eat through the amniotic fluid!
    Movements
  • Punches, rolls, and kicks are becoming stronger and more frequent.
  • You may even notice a rhythm as your baby develops sleep and wake cycles.

  • Reproductive Development
  • Girls: The vagina is forming.
  • Boys: The testes are beginning to descend from the abdomen.
    Heartbeat
  • Baby’s heart is beating at about 120–160 beats per minute strong and steady.

Mom’s Experience at Week 21

This week brings new changes for you as your baby bump grows:

  • Baby Bump – Your uterus is now about an inch above your belly button.

  • Feeling Baby Move – Kicks and rolls are more noticeable and may even be seen from the outside.

  • Skin & Hair – Pregnancy hormones can bring thicker hair and glowing skin, but also potential stretch marks.

  • Discomforts – Backaches, leg cramps, and swelling may become more common.

  • Energy Levels – Many moms still feel relatively energetic during this stage.

Ultrasound at Week 21

If you haven’t already, your mid-pregnancy anatomy scan may be scheduled around this time.

What You’ll See

  • Baby practicing swallowing, sucking, and kicking.
  • Clearer images of facial features with 3D/4D ultrasound.
  • Fingers, toes, and tiny details like nails can be visible.
    Gender Reveal
  • Gender is typically clear and accurate now making this a perfect time for gender reveal ultrasounds.
    Heartbeat Recordings
  • At 4 Baby Ultrasound, we can record your baby’s heartbeat so you can keep this memory forever.

Health & Wellness Tips for Week 21

Staying healthy is important for both you and your growing baby:

  1. Balanced Nutrition

    • Eat plenty of lean protein, leafy greens, and whole grains.

    • Calcium-rich foods like yogurt, cheese, and milk help build baby’s bones.

    • Iron intake is crucial to support increased blood volume.

  2. Stay Hydrated

    • Drinking enough water helps with swelling, skin elasticity, and amniotic fluid levels.

  3. Exercise & Movement

    • Light exercise like walking or prenatal yoga can help relieve back pain.

    • Stretching helps reduce leg cramps.

  4. Comfort & Sleep

    • Side sleeping (especially on your left side) helps improve circulation.

    • A pregnancy pillow can help support your bump and back.

  5. Monitor Your Body

    • Pay attention to swelling or unusual symptoms and share them with your healthcare provider.

Prenatal Care at Week 21

Anatomy Scan

  • This detailed ultrasound measures your baby’s organs, brain, spine, heart, and more.
  • It also checks placenta placement and amniotic fluid levels.
    Routine Care
  • Your doctor will continue monitoring your weight, blood pressure, and overall health.

Bonding With Your Banana-Sized Baby

Your baby’s hearing is developing more, meaning they may respond to your voice and familiar sounds.

  • Talk & Sing – Your baby can hear your voice, so read or sing to them.
  • Partner Bonding – Invite your partner to place their hand on your belly to feel stronger kicks.
  • Ultrasound Keepsakes – Capture these bonding moments with high-quality images and videos at 4 Baby Ultrasound.
