Week 15 of Pregnancy – Your Baby Is the Size of an Apple

Welcome to Week 15 of pregnancy! You’re well into the second trimester now, often considered the most comfortable stage of pregnancy. By this week, your baby has grown to about the size of an apple around 4 inches long and weighing roughly 2.5 ounces.

This is a period of exciting developments. Your baby is becoming more active, and you may soon begin to feel the first gentle flutters of movement, known as “quickening.” At 4 Baby Ultrasound, we love capturing these milestones with our advanced 2D, 3D, 4D, and HD Live ultrasound sessions, giving families an unforgettable bonding experience.

Baby’s Development at Week 15

Your little apple is growing rapidly and becoming more expressive every day.
Size & Growth
  • Baby measures about 4 inches from head to bottom.
  • Muscles and bones are strengthening, giving movements more definition.
    Facial Features
  • The eyes are still closed but can sense light.
  • Ears are positioned on the sides of the head, and your baby may soon be able to hear your voice.
  • Facial muscles allow for frowning, smiling, and even sucking motions.
    Body Development
  • Hair is beginning to grow on the scalp and eyebrows.
  • Fine hair (lanugo) continues to cover the body, helping with temperature regulation.
  • Joints and limbs are moving more freely, allowing kicks, stretches, and thumb-sucking.
    Internal Systems
  • The lungs are practicing breathing movements, preparing for life outside the womb.
  • Bones are ossifying (hardening), especially in the arms and legs.
  • Baby’s heart is pumping about 25 quarts of blood per day.
    Movements
  • While you may not feel it yet, your baby is busy tumbling, rolling, and kicking.
  • By ultrasound, you might even catch them sucking their thumb or reaching for their face.

Mom’s Experience at Week 15

Many moms feel more comfortable at this stage. Here’s what you may be noticing:

  • A Small Baby Bump – Your belly is showing more, and maternity clothes may feel more comfortable.

  • Increased Energy – Fatigue often lessens in the second trimester.

  • Clearer Skin & Hair Changes – Hormonal shifts may give you that “pregnancy glow.”

  • Possible Nasal Congestion – Pregnancy hormones can cause mild swelling in nasal passages.

  • Round Ligament Pain – As your uterus grows, you may feel mild stretching pains on the sides of your abdomen.

Emotionally, many women feel more at ease now that early pregnancy symptoms have eased and the risk of miscarriage has decreased significantly.

Ultrasound at Week 15

Week 15 ultrasound is a wonderful opportunity to see your baby’s growth and activity.
What You May See
  • A clearer profile with defined facial features.
  • Baby stretching, kicking, or sucking their thumb.
  • The heartbeat, strong and steady at around 140–150 beats per minute.
    Gender Reveal Possibility
  • At Week 15, it may be possible to determine the baby’s gender via ultrasound, although accuracy improves around Week 16–20.
  • Many families choose to schedule a gender reveal ultrasound at this stage for an early peek.

At 4 Baby Ultrasound, we specialize in keepsake imaging. With our advanced technology, you’ll enjoy high-quality images and videos to share with your loved ones.

Health & Wellness Tips for Week 15

Keeping yourself and your baby healthy is a top priority.

  1. Eat a Balanced Diet

    • Include fruits (like apples!), vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains.

    • Increase calcium intake for baby’s growing bones.

    • Iron-rich foods like spinach and lentils prevent anemia.

  2. Stay Active

    • Gentle exercises such as walking, swimming, and prenatal yoga are beneficial.
Exercise helps improve circulation and reduces back pain.

  3. Hydrate Well

    • Drink at least 8–10 glasses of water daily.

    • Staying hydrated reduces swelling and supports amniotic fluid levels.

  4. Focus on Rest

    • Sleep on your side to promote healthy blood flow.

    • Use pillows to support your belly and back.

  5. Continue Prenatal Vitamins

    • Essential nutrients like folic acid, vitamin D, and DHA support your baby’s growth.

Prenatal Care at Week 15

Your provider may recommend or discuss:

  • Quad Screening – A blood test that checks for chromosomal conditions and neural tube defects.

  • Checking Baby’s Growth – Measuring your uterus size and monitoring weight gain.

  • Heartbeat Monitoring – Using a Doppler to listen to your baby’s heartbeat.

  • Next Ultrasound Planning – The detailed anatomy scan (around Week 18–20) may be discussed.

Bonding With Baby at Week 15

Your baby is becoming more responsive, making this a wonderful time to connect.

  • Talk & Sing – Soon, your baby will begin to hear sounds from the outside world.

  • Play Music – Gentle music may soothe your baby in the womb.

  • Capture Ultrasound Memories – Keepsake ultrasounds provide images and videos you’ll treasure forever.

  • Celebrate Growth – Share your journey with loved ones by announcing milestones.
