Preparing For Sonogram

Preparing For Sonogram

A sonogram, also known as an ultrasound, is a safe and informative way for doctors to examine your internal organs. But how does a sonogram work? That is a very common question people ask when they come for it. Once you are aware of its preparations, you will know the process behind it. Whether you’re pregnant and excited to see your baby or need to diagnose a medical condition, a little preparation can make the experience smoother and less stressful. Here’s a guide to ensure you’re well-prepared for your upcoming sonogram.

Understanding the Different Types of Sonograms

Preparation can vary slightly depending on the type of sonogram you’re having. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Abdominal Ultrasound: You must fast for 8 hours, as this enables the radiographer to get better images of the organs in the abdomen.
  • Pelvic Ultrasound: You may need a full bladder prior to the procedure, as you can drink 32 ounces of water an hour before the exam to improve the viewing of the uterus and the ovaries. Most of the forms of ultrasounds, such as the transvaginal ones where the probe is inserted into the vagina, do not need a full bladder.
  • Other Ultrasounds: Surveys of other regions, such as the thyroid or breast, for instance, do not require any certain eating modification.

General Tips for Every Sonogram

  • Gather Information: The procedures before the sonogram will depend on the type of sonogram you are about to undergo, so you should discuss this with your doctor. Always query about items like fasting or the extent to which one’s bladder may be filled.
  • Wear Comfortable Clothing: Loose-fitting clothing with easy access to the area being examined is ideal. You may be asked to wear a gown during the procedure.
  • Gather Medical Records: You should not go for a mammogram without taking any documents, which may include previous films, clinical records, and a list of the drugs that you are currently using.
  • Manage Your Expectations: Sonograms are absolutely indispensable; however, they do not always result in a clear diagnosis. Discuss with your doctor about possible outcomes and further tests that may be required.

The Day of Your Sonogram

  • Arrive Early: If you need to fill out a form, be sure to arrive at the facility a few minutes earlier.
  • Empty Your Bladder (if applicable): If a full bladder is imminent, the patient should adhere to the doctor’s advice regarding fluids.
  • Remove Jewelry: Depending on the part of the body being examined, you may be required to remove ornaments such as jewelry or piercings.

What to Expect During the Sonogram?

  • You’ll be positioned comfortably on a table.
  • A warm gel will be applied to the area being examined.
  • The technician will gently move a handheld transducer (probe) over the area, emitting sound waves and capturing the returning echoes.
  • The process is painless and usually takes 15-30 minutes.
  • You may be asked to change positions or hold your breath briefly during the exam.

After the Sonogram

  • The gel will be wiped clean.
  • The technician may provide preliminary results or ask you to wait for the doctor’s explanation.
  • You may resume your normal activities.
